Montessori School Victoria: Why the Method Is More Relevant Than Ever
Here’s what the evidence actually shows.
Maria Montessori developed her approach to education in Rome in 1907, working with children who had been written off by the conventional system. The method she documented — prepared environments, self-directed work, multi-age classrooms, learning through hands-on materials — is now over 115 years old. And education researchers keep arriving at the same conclusions she did.
That’s not the standard arc of educational innovation. Most pedagogical movements have peaks and troughs. They generate enthusiasm, face criticism, get superseded. Montessori has persisted and, in recent years, has gathered more rigorous research support than at any previous point in its history.
This isn’t nostalgia. It’s the result of two things happening simultaneously: better research methodology applied to Montessori outcomes, and growing recognition in mainstream education that the skills contemporary life demands — self-direction, intrinsic motivation, executive function, collaborative problem-solving — are precisely what Montessori environments are structured to develop.
What the research has been finding
For most of Montessori’s existence, the research base was limited. Studies were small, controls were weak, and critics could reasonably argue that any positive outcomes might reflect selection effects — families who chose Montessori tending to be more engaged with education in general, rather than anything the method itself produced.
That methodological gap has been closing substantially. The most rigorous analysis to date is a 2023 systematic review published by the Campbell Collaboration, one of the most respected bodies in evidence synthesis internationally. Led by Justus Randolph and a team of researchers, the review began by examining 2,012 Montessori studies, closely read 173 of them, and retained 32 for inclusion — keeping only studies that were experimental or quasi-experimental in design, showed evidence of baseline equivalence, included a control group, collected sufficient data to calculate an effect size, and measured actual student academic or behavioural outcomes.
Across those 32 rigorously selected studies, the review found consistent positive effects for Montessori students on all nine measures examined: academic outcomes, social-emotional development, and affective measures including student engagement and motivation. Most effect sizes were medium to large. This is the kind of result that’s difficult to attribute to selection effects when the methodology specifically controls for them.
A separate line of research has looked not at children in Montessori schools but at adults who were once Montessori students. A 2021 study published in Frontiers in Psychology by Angeline Lillard and colleagues at the University of Virginia surveyed 1,905 adults aged 18 to 81 about their educational histories and administered a comprehensive battery of wellbeing measures. The sample was roughly split between people who had attended Montessori for at least two years in childhood and those who had not.
The results were striking in their consistency. Attending Montessori for at least two childhood years was associated with significantly higher adult wellbeing on all four wellbeing factors measured: general wellbeing, engagement, social trust, and self-confidence. Critically, the association held even when controlling for childhood socioeconomic status, private school attendance, age, gender, and race — the most obvious alternative explanations. And the association showed dosage effects: the longer participants had attended Montessori, the higher their adult wellbeing.
Lead researcher Lillard described the breadth of the findings as surprising: on almost every survey administered, people who had spent at least two years in Montessori had higher wellbeing than those who had not. This wasn’t a narrow finding about one aspect of adult life. It ran across how people thought and felt about their lives broadly.
Why these findings make sense structurally
The research results become less surprising when you understand what Montessori environments are actually designed to produce — and how those qualities map onto what we know about human development and long-term wellbeing.
Self-determination theory, one of the most extensively validated frameworks in developmental psychology, proposes that humans have three core psychological needs: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. When these needs are met during development, intrinsic motivation flourishes and wellbeing is supported. When they’re thwarted — by environments that control through rewards and punishments, undermine children’s sense of capability, or fail to build genuine connection — motivation becomes externally dependent and wellbeing suffers.
Montessori environments are designed, structurally and intentionally, around exactly these three needs. Children choose their work from materials within the prepared environment — autonomy. They work at their own pace through materials designed to produce mastery through repetition and self-correction — competence. They work within stable, multi-age communities where relationships develop across years rather than resetting annually — relatedness.
This isn’t accidental alignment. Maria Montessori’s observations of children led her to conclusions that self-determination researchers arrived at independently decades later through controlled studies. The two bodies of work point in the same direction because they’re describing the same thing: what children need in order to develop into capable, engaged, motivated human beings.
The contrast with conventional schooling is structural rather than incidental. Conventional classrooms are organized primarily around teacher direction, standardized pace, and external evaluation. Students receive work selected by adults, complete it on timelines set by adults, and learn whether they succeeded through adult judgment expressed as marks. The autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs that predict intrinsic motivation and wellbeing are addressed inconsistently, when they’re addressed at all.
This isn’t a criticism of teachers working in conventional structures — most of whom understand what children need and work to provide it within real constraints. It’s a description of what those structures are designed to do, which is deliver curriculum to groups of same-age children at a standard pace. The structures weren’t designed with children’s psychological needs as the primary variable. Montessori structures were.
The same logic explains why Montessori students tend to show stronger executive function. The prepared environment, with its long uninterrupted work periods and expectation that children manage their own time and attention, provides sustained practice in exactly the capacities that constitute executive function: planning, organising, regulating attention, and sustaining effort. These capacities aren’t taught directly in Montessori — they develop through repeated exercise in an environment structured to require and support them.
What changes across ages — and what doesn’t
One of the persistent misconceptions about Montessori is that it works for young children but fades in relevance as students get older. The research doesn’t support this. The Campbell Collaboration meta-analysis found positive effects across age ranges. The adult wellbeing study found dosage effects — more years in Montessori, not just early years, predicted better outcomes.
The method adapts substantially across developmental stages, as it should. What an Early Years Montessori environment looks like — with its sensorial materials, practical life exercises, and emphasis on developing foundational independence — looks different from what an elementary Montessori environment looks like, which looks different again from an adolescent program.
In Early Years and elementary, the prepared environment is physical: specific materials arranged on shelves that children select based on readiness and interest, presenting concepts in hands-on, concrete form before abstract representation. Young children work with bead chains that make mathematical relationships tangible, sandpaper letters that make phonics tactile, puzzle maps that make geography spatial.
In elementary, the scale expands. Multi-age classrooms spanning three grade levels give students both the experience of being newer members supported by older peers and, eventually, the experience of being the older peer providing that support. The Great Lessons — Montessori’s narrative approach to introducing scientific and historical concepts — give children a sense of their place in vast stories, connecting specific knowledge to larger context.
In adolescence, the application becomes more direct. The developmental needs of teenagers — autonomy, real-world relevance, genuine responsibility — are met through work that extends beyond classrooms into communities and professional contexts. Projects address actual problems. Mentorship connects learning to real fields of practice. The curriculum serves the student rather than the student serving the curriculum.
What remains consistent across all these stages is the underlying architecture: student choice within prepared structure, learning through doing, assessment through observation rather than comparison, and community built across age differences rather than segregated by them.
The question families should actually ask about any Montessori school
Here the history of Montessori creates a complication worth naming. The word “Montessori” is not trademarked. Any school can describe itself as Montessori without meeting any particular standard of implementation. This has produced a wide range of schools using the name, some of which implement the method rigorously and some of which adopt surface features — the terminology, the materials, perhaps a morning work cycle — while maintaining fundamentally conventional structures underneath.
When families research Montessori schools, this gap matters. The research outcomes described above were produced in environments implementing the method faithfully. There’s no evidence that a school calling itself Montessori while primarily using teacher-directed instruction with Montessori materials on the shelf produces those outcomes.
The questions that reveal what’s actually happening in any Montessori school aren’t about marketing language. They’re specific: How long is the uninterrupted work period? How are students grouped — and are there genuinely multi-age classrooms or single-grade classes with a different name? How does the school assess learning — through observation, portfolios, and narrative, or through tests and comparative grades? How do teachers describe their role, and does that description match what you observe them actually doing in classrooms?
These questions have answers that distinguish genuine from nominal Montessori. They’re worth asking directly.
What you’re looking for in the answers is consistency between what the school describes and what you observe. In a genuine Montessori environment, children are moving and choosing — selecting materials from shelves, working in different areas of the room, sometimes alone and sometimes collaboratively, at a range of activities simultaneously. The teacher moves through the space giving individual or small-group lessons, observing, facilitating. Silence isn’t the goal; sustained, purposeful engagement is.
In an environment using Montessori terminology over a conventional structure, what you’re more likely to observe is rows or clusters of desks, whole-class instruction, children completing assigned work at the same time, and assessment happening primarily through tests and marked work rather than teacher observation and portfolio. The Montessori materials may be present — on shelves against the wall — without being central to how children actually spend their time.
The physical environment is a useful indicator. Genuine Montessori classrooms look different from conventional classrooms in ways that are hard to fake for a visitor: the arrangement of materials on low, accessible shelves; the mixed-age grouping visible in the size and developmental range of children in the room; the absence of a teacher’s desk as the centrepiece; the presence of different children doing different things simultaneously. These aren’t aesthetic choices — they’re structural requirements of the method. Environments that don’t have them aren’t implementing the method, regardless of what they call themselves.
What 67 years looks like in practice
Westmont has been implementing Montessori education on its Metchosin campus since 1958. It developed before most of the research described here existed, because the founders understood what the method produced from direct observation rather than from academic validation.
67 years of continuous implementation means the school’s culture has been shaped by the method rather than layered over a pre-existing conventional structure. Teachers have trained in Montessori pedagogy. The physical environment has been built around its requirements. The multi-age community structure is genuine — children know students across grade spans because the campus has been this size and this structure for decades.
It also means there are graduates. Not hypothetical future graduates, but people who completed their Early Years, Elementary, Middle School, and High School journeys at Westmont and can speak to what that experience produced in them. Children who arrive in Early Years and stay through graduation have the opportunity to develop within a consistent philosophical environment across their entire formal education.

That’s not because BC followed Montessori. The gap between BC’s curriculum intent and what most BC classrooms can deliver in practice is real and well-documented. The curriculum documents call for student agency, creativity, and personalized pacing. Classroom structures optimized for large groups and standardized assessment can move in that direction, incrementally. Montessori environments are built for it from the ground up, which is why the alignment feels so direct. A school that has been implementing these principles for 67 years was not ahead of its time in any visionary sense. It was simply implementing what Maria Montessori documented, which turned out to describe something true about how learning works.
The Montessori method is old enough to have a long track record and young enough, in research terms, to still be generating significant findings. The 2023 Campbell Collaboration meta-analysis and the 2021 adult wellbeing study represent the most rigorous examination the method has ever received. Both found what researchers increasingly find when they look carefully: the method works, and the effects aren’t limited to academic performance or confined to early childhood.
