June 23-27: “Survival Skills”
For this weeklong camp, campers will gain resilience and independence, fostering confidence to rely on themselves while also working together to accomplish important tasks that may one day prove vital. Campers will learn how to build natural shelters quickly, make fires, tie knots, collect water, and understand animal safety from bears and cougars. They will also learn about wind, food, cub, and orientation wisdom. Logical planning, rationing, and packing will be taught, allowing for student-led problem solving and critical thinking. Additionally, campers will learn basic but useful first aid, ending the week with a hike to test their newfound adventurous confidence and skills. If your child wants to be a superhero, this camp will give them the lifelong confidence to be one, in a safe and fun way. All activities will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
July 7-11: “Ecology and Sustainability”
There is no doubt that climate change will be a daunting challenge for the future of our children’s lives. This weeklong camp focuses on countering eco-anxiety before it even has a chance to grow, allowing campers to ground themselves in practical and holistic experiences that build resilience through fun. Trained by staff with education, science, and climate change degrees, campers will learn how to take care of nature, and how it will take care of them, focusing on forest ecology, educational fauna/flora lessons, oral storytelling, and water, waste, and energy (electricity) efficiency. Fun team-building exercises, such as capture the flag, will bring campers together for gardening, agriculture, recycling, composting, seed-planting, and generally learning how to respect the Earth to build empathy and awareness for other entities—and themselves. All activities will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
July 14-18: “Awareness and Exploration”
Campers registered in this weeklong camp will gain skills beyond observational and orientation techniques, fostering the development of self-awareness and exploration. They will look inward and outward, building the foundation of personality that may foreshadow who your child will become. Campers will be encouraged to think deeply about poetry through creative writing, artmaking, personality discovery exercises, and group games that highlight diverse strengths and weaknesses. There will also be freedom activities such as camper-invented games, whether on the playground or in the classroom. Staff will host scavenger hunts that require team navigation, geocaching, and physical literacy skills. All activities will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
July 21-25: “Engineering and Building”
Campers registered in this weeklong camp will develop their fine motor and hand-eye coordination while engaging in practical critical thinking, all within the magic of creating something with their own hands. Inspired by holistic learning, campers will leave their mark on the world, gaining a sense of importance and contribution. Our future rocket scientists will participate in thrilling labs such as the clay boat vs. weight lab, pasta towers, egg-drop challenge, gravity drop race, toy car racing, stream boat racing, paper airplane competitions, homemade frisbees, boomerang creation, tin-can telephones, catapult launching, and more. The week will conclude with a sandcastle tournament in the sun to test their building skills. All activities will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
August 11-15: “Science”
Campers registered in this weeklong camp will work with staff trained in education and biology degrees, exploring the hidden world of (safe) chemistry, biology, and physics. Campers will engage in fascinating experiments such as lava lamps, lemon volcanoes, elephant toothpaste, making slime, rainbow jars, Skittles experiments, dancing raisins, rock candy, shiny pennies, baking soda balloon experiments, balloon cars, dancing corn, exploding baggies, invisible ink, milk plastic, paper airplanes, walking water, 7-layer density experiments, bouncy eggs, egg vinegar experiments, magic milk, awesome experiments, and floating eggs. By the end of the camp, campers will be in awe of the magic the natural world has to offer, fostering an early love for STEM, along with arts and free-play fun. All activities will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
August 25-29: “History and Art”
Campers registered in this weeklong camp will work with staff trained in education and history degrees, learning about culture, art, diversity, and history in a simple and fun way. They will discover the endless possibilities the world offers and explore how much is out there to learn. Campers will help cook easy-to-make traditional foods from different cultures, participate in drama, art, music, and costume/artifact show-and-tells, gaining an anthropological head start while conquering any lingering egocentrism. Campers will be exposed to maps, pictures, stories, and videos from the four corners of the world and learn how all humans of different backgrounds have contributed beautiful pieces of humanity to the world. All activities will ensure cultural appreciation and not cultural appropriation. All exercises will take place in Westmont’s spacious Montessori classrooms, multiple playgrounds, grass sports fields, concrete sports field, forest, meadow, nearby hiking trails, and beach.
