Magnus Hanton

Head of School

Magnus Hanton has served as the Head of School at Westmont Montessori School in Victoria, BC, since 2012. Under his leadership, the school has flourished, doubling student enrollment and significantly expanding its programs.

Magnus has spearheaded initiatives that emphasize entrepreneurial and creative thinking, transcending traditional educational models. He has fostered partnerships with local organizations, universities, and businesses.

Magnus believes in empowering students to make a meaningful impact on the world. He co-developed the Westmont Prize, a competition encouraging secondary students to propose innovative solutions to pressing issues, and introduced a mentorship program connecting students with professionals in their fields of interest. Beyond his operational and strategic leadership, Magnus is deeply committed to making education a transformative and inclusive experience for all.

Vice-Principal

Erin is excited to be serving as Vice-Principal this year. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hon.) in 1997, a Bachelor of Education (K–12) in 2003, and a Master of Education (Educational Psychology) in 2025. A BC-certified teacher with over 20 years of classroom experience, Erin joined the Westmont community in 2012 and completed her Montessori training through the Vancouver School Board in 2015. She is passionate about creating exceptional learning opportunities and inspiring students to become curious, life-long learners. Outside of school, Erin enjoys pickleball, yoga, paddleboarding, rock climbing, knitting, reading, and spending time with her husband and two daughters

Anastassia Bennett

Anastassia is a Certified Professional Accountant with over 25 years of experience in finance and education and has been with the school since August 2021.
Her career includes management roles at Keyano College and the University of Alberta, where she developed a deep appreciation for lifelong learning and student-centered environments.
She chose to join Westmont because of her strong belief in Montessori education and its ability to nurture independence, curiosity, and a love of learning.
What makes her connection to the school even more meaningful is that her two children are also part of the Westmont family. She feels incredibly blessed that they are growing up in such a beautiful setting, surrounded by nature and guided by passionate educators.
Outside of her professional life, Anastassia enjoys hiking, parenting and travelling.

Sharen Gauld

Accounting Administrator

Sharen has over 36 years of experience in accounting and administration, working first in the travel industry and then for Westmont since 2007.

She and her husband originally became acquainted with Westmont when they enrolled their son for Kindergarten in 2004 and continued his enrollment for seven years.

Sharen and her family have been Metchosin residents for 30 years.

Melanie Fennell has been part of the Westmont community since 2008, when her son Jordan began Grade 1. Shortly after, her daughter Jill joined the school in Kindergarten after attending Montessori preschool in Sooke.
With 15 years of administrative experience in both a brokerage firm and the provincial government, Melanie later stepped away from her career to focus on raising her children. When the opportunity arose, she applied for the secretary position in the front office.  Over the past three years, she has transitioned into the role of Executive Assistant to the Head of School—a position she thoroughly enjoys and embraces.
Melanie appreciates the hardworking, caring, and dedicated staff at Westmont, who consistently go above and beyond to create a warm and inspiring learning environment for our students.
Tricia Lang

Admissions Coordinator

Tricia initially entered our Westmont community as a parent in 2010, when her son began Kindergarten, eventually becoming one of Westmont’s first high school graduates. After years of volunteering with both the school and the PAC, Tricia officially joined the Westmont team in 2014 working at the front desk and in more recent years has embraced the role of Admissions Coordinator.

A lifelong learner, Tricia holds a BA and MA and has pursued doctoral studies in the fields of Art History, Archaeology, Classical Studies and History. She deeply values the Montessori ethos she first witnessed through her son’s experience at Westmont—the idea that education should nurture a lifelong love of learning. She is excited to share that same enthusiasm with new families as they discover the opportunities Westmont offers.

Outside of school, Tricia enjoys ocean kayaking, immersing herself in a history or espionage book or podcast, all the while planning her next travel adventure.

Miranda recently moved to Victoria and brings over 14 years of administrative experience, including 9+ years working within the public education sector.  She was drawn to Westmont by the Montessori learning environment and the unique forest-meets-ocean setting of the campus. Miranda is excited to get to know the students, families and community members who make Westmont such a special place. Outside of work, Miranda is an Edmonton Oilers fan who enjoys reading and exploring all that Vancouver Island has to offer.

Debbie is a Montessori-trained, B.C.-certified teacher who has been a dedicated member of the Westmont community for over 15 years. She is deeply passionate about Montessori education, particularly its emphasis on following the child and building a strong, connected community. Her teaching is guided by a belief in nurturing each child’s curiosity, independence, and love of learning.
She brings a special enthusiasm for science, art, and creative problem-solving into her classroom, encouraging students to explore the world with both imagination and critical thinking. Whether it’s through hands-on experiments, open-ended projects, or collaborative challenges, she helps students develop confidence in their abilities and a lifelong passion for learning.
Outside the classroom, she enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors with her retired/fired/rescued sled dogs. Her time in nature inspires the sense of wonder and discovery that she brings to her teaching every day.

Beth is a multi-level trained Montessori teacher who has been teaching since 2013. She brings over a decade of experience and a deep passion for child-centered learning to her classroom. At Westmont, she loves the unique blend of Montessori and outdoor education, where students can thrive both academically and in nature. When not teaching, she can often be found exploring the natural beauty of Vancouver Island. Her dedication to both Montessori philosophy and the outdoors inspire her work with children every day.

Amy Paine is an experienced Early Childhood Educator and a proud mum of three. She’s spent over 15 years working in a variety of educational settings and loves creating spaces where kids feel safe, supported, and excited to learn. Her own parenting journey helps her connect with families in a real and relatable way. Amy enjoys reading and spending time with her family and friends, and she values the simple joys of everyday life. She was drawn to Westmont because of its beautiful, community-centred environment, which felt like the perfect fit for her values and approach to early learning.

 

Rachel Jeffrey

Rachel is a teacher in the Dogwood Class at Westmont and has been part of the school community for 14 years, starting as a sub, moving into the position of an E.A. and French teacher, and transitioning to the role of teacher 7 years ago. She holds a B.A. in General Studies, a B.Ed in Elementary Education, and has completed both a Montessori Certificate and Diploma. Rachel has always loved spending time with young children, enjoying their playful nature and curiosity.  Rachel joyfully discovered Westmont after teaching Middle School for 3 years and quickly fell in love with the Montessori approach to learning, the time spent outdoors and the friendly staff.  When she’s not teaching, you’ll likely find Rachel listening to Big Shiny Tunes (2 through 5 are the best) while baking, or getting lost in a good book.

Shannon graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education in 2002 from Vancouver Island University. One lovely afternoon, she happened upon Westmont Montessori School and was enamoured by the beautiful setting and warm and welcoming sense of community, and so her journey in Montessori teaching and learning began. Shannon has 17 years of dedicated teaching experience at Westmont, nurturing young minds in the Early Years programme. She pours her heart and soul into preparing learning spaces that feel like home and inspire peace, joy and discovery. Her passion for creativity and artistic expression is evident in the experiences she brings into the classroom. With a heart full of enthusiasm and dedication to fostering independent, curious, happy learners, she feels honoured to be guiding young minds in the Montessori learning environment. In her ‘spare time,’ Shannon is also a professional portrait and lifestyle photographer, cowgirl at heart, vintage thrifter, beach-loving, paddleboarding, sun-seeking, nature-loving wanderer, with a romantic soul and a free and happy spirit.

Erin is passionate about creating a warm, engaging environment where children can explore, grow, and thrive. She holds a Diploma in Recreation and Leisure Services, Montessori Certificate in Early Years Education and a Certificate in Early Childhood Education. She has worked in both nature-based and play-based preschools. These experiences have shaped her belief of the importance of hands-on exploration, independence, and child-led discovery- principles that align naturally with the philosophy at Westmont Montessori School.
Marguerite Sans

Marguerite Sans holds a Bachelor of Science and an Early Childhood Education certificate, along with Montessori training in Early Years education. Since joining Westmont in 2023, she has taken on roles as an Educational Assistant, Early Years teacher, and Teacher on Call, and is thrilled to be part of the Douglas Fir teaching team this year. Marguerite was drawn to Westmont because she believes in the Montessori philosophy and its principles of hands-on, self-directed learning. Previously, she worked as a veterinary technician and certified wildlife rehabilitator, experiences that deepened her respect of the natural world and the importance of fostering curiosity in children. Outside of work, Marguerite enjoys exploring the outdoors with her son, who has been part of the Westmont community since he was three years old.

Janet Onita is a dedicated early years teacher, holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a British Columbia Early Childhood Educator (ECE) license. With years of experience nurturing young minds, she has developed a passion for fostering creativity, independence, and critical thinking in her students. Drawn to Westmont’s commitment to holistic education and supportive community, Janet’s educational philosophy aligns with the school’s values. Janet believes in every child’s unique potential and is dedicated to helping them discover and embrace their individual strengths. Jessica Lejeune is her 16th year as an Early Years teacher at Westmont Montessori School, where she brings patience, creativity, and a deep love of learning to her classroom each day. With a strong belief in the Montessori philosophy, she guides children in developing independence, confidence, and curiosity through hands-on exploration and respectful relationships. Jessica is dedicated to fostering a nurturing environment where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to grow socially, emotionally, and academically.

Sarah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Philosophy from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education from the University of Calgary. She is also a certified Early Childhood Educator with specializations in Infant & Toddler Education and Special Needs Education. Sarah taught Grade One and Kindergarten with the Calgary Board of Education for six years, where she discovered Montessori education and completed training in the Lower Elementary curriculum. After having her daughter, she developed a passion for the early years principles of Montessori. Upon moving back to the island, she discovered Westmont, where she is starting her fourth school year. Outside the classroom, Sarah enjoys gardening, savoring delicious coffee, and sharing adventures on the West Coast with her daughter and fiancé.

Emily completed her Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) at Camosun College and holds an Early Years Montessori Diploma.

She has worked in a variety of early years settings, supporting young children through their foundational learning stages. As a mom of two, Emily brings both professional knowledge and personal experience to her teaching, giving her a deep understanding of the joys and challenges of early childhood.

Emily was drawn to Westmont because of its warm community and commitment to authentic Montessori education. She values how the school supports children in becoming independent, curious learners while honoring their unique pace and interests.

Outside of the classroom, Emily enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, exploring nature, and discovering creative projects to do together at home. She also loves relaxing with a good cup of coffee and exploring the world through travel and vacations.

This is Holly Ireland! She was born and raised in Victoria and lives with her husband, 4-year-old daughter and black lab. She has her Bachelor of Education Degree, ECE Certification (ITE/SNE) and Early Years Montessori Training. She has previously lived in Calgary, where she taught for the Calgary Board of Education, gaining experience in a Montessori Public School. She’s been teaching in a Montessori setting since 2014, including the Parent-Child, Introduction to Preschool and Casa Programs here at Westmont. In her spare time, Holly enjoys yoga, line dancing and outings with her family.

Lower Elementary

Emily holds a Bachelor of Education from Queen’s University, with a special focus on supporting students with exceptionalities, as well as a Bachelor of Health Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. She is currently working on her Elementary I and II Montessori training.  Emily previously taught in the Early Years program as a Kindergarten teacher and has also taught in diverse international settings, including China and Bahrain, where she gained experience teaching English as a Second Language and the British Columbia curriculum. She was drawn to Westmont for its strong connection to nature, emphasis on experiential outdoor learning, and the warm, welcoming school community. Outside of the classroom, Emily enjoys spending time outdoors with her dogs, reading, and traveling the world. 

Laurie Blyskis

Classroom Assistant- Juniper Class

Laurie Blyskis joined Westmont in 2025 as an EA in Juniper class.  She will remain in Juniper this year but will be taking on the CA role.  Laurie moved to the island with her family from Ontario in 2020 and is loving life by the ocean, skiing the mountains and hiking our beautiful trails.  
Following her AMI training and 12 year Casa teaching career in Ontario, Laurie stepped creatively into the world of Interior Design, successfully running her own business for 8 years.  Her Montessori roots and love of working with children drew her back when she discovered our beautiful campus.
Justina Leson

Justina Leson holds a Bachelor of Education from the University of Victoria and has completed her Montessori Elementary I training, currently working toward full certification. She has been part of the Westmont Montessori community for several years, beginning with camps and art instruction before moving into the Lower Elementary classroom. Drawn to Westmont’s close-knit community and hands-on, child-centered approach, Justina values creating a prepared environment where students can explore, discover, and develop independence at their own pace. Originally from northern British Columbia and Alberta, she has called Vancouver Island home since 2013. Outside the classroom, Justina enjoys painting, traveling, and spending time at the beach.

 

Betina Pickelein

Teacher- Hemlock Class

Betina Pickelein has been a dedicated educator at Westmont Montessori School since 2004, bringing with her valuable experience from Germany, where she taught for two years before moving to Canada. She completed her university studies in Germany and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a major in Natural Sciences, as well as a comprehensive AMI diploma and a diploma as an early childhood educator. She has contributed deeply to the Westmont community, both professionally and personally. Her two children attended Westmont until Grade 8, where they thrived in the freedom of the Montessori philosophy and progressed individually with a strong love of learning. Betina cherishes working at Westmont for its supportive co-workers, vibrant community, beautiful natural surroundings, and its close proximity to the beach. Outside of teaching, Betina enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, playing table tennis, paddleboarding, camping, and going on road trips with friends and loved ones.

Kim Maan has been an educator at Westmont since 2009, taking on the position of full-time classroom teacher until 2019. After graduating from UVic, she taught for many years at an independent school for gifted learners in Richmond, BC. Kim now relishes her role as a teacher-on-call and is also incredibly pleased to be part of the Hemlock team on Fridays. As well, Kim continues as an afterschool elementary daycare supervisor this year, a position she thoroughly enjoys. Garden therapy is her solace at home as is spending time in Mexico.

Liz has been a valued member of the Westmont community for the past three years where her daughter also attends. She completed her training at Coastal College of BC where she earned her Education Assistant diploma, ECEA certificate, and completed the Autism, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Augmentative and Alternative Communications Course. Previous to starting her journey in education, Liz taught dance in the community for many years where she gained extensive knowledge and experience working with children of all ages from early years age to post graduate. Dance is still a passion of hers which she hopes to continue to share with students in the years to come. In her free time, Liz enjoys being in nature, playing the piano, and spending time with her family.

Lauryn Lewis holds a Bachelor of Education in Elementary Education from the University of Victoria and is in the final stages of completing her Montessori training. With several years of experience at West-Mont, Lauryn is deeply committed to the school’s values and has enjoyed watching students grow and thrive in this community. As a former West-Mont student herself, returning to the school as an educator has been a rewarding experience. Outside the classroom, she enjoys traveling and playing the ukulele. She looks forward to continuing to learn alongside her students and be a part of their educational journey.

Nicole is in her second year as a Classroom Assistant in the Lower Elementary program at Westmont. She holds both an Early Childhood Education certificate and a Montessori diploma and has been working with children in the field for nearly twenty years. Nicole loves being part of the Montessori community and especially enjoys supporting students in their learning and growth. She was drawn to Westmont’s beautiful location, with its close connection to nature, trails, and the beach. Outside of school, Nicole enjoys crafting and finding creative ways to bring her ideas to life.

 

Upper Elementary

Teacher- Sitka Class

Jamie is thrilled to be joining the Upper Elementary program this year as part of the Sitka class. He has been teaching at Westmont for four years, all of which have been in the Lower Elementary program. Jamie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and Hispanic Studies (2019) and completed his Bachelor of Education in 2020. He is currently finishing his Upper Elementary Montessori teacher training through the Houston Montessori Center and is on track to graduate in June. Jamie is passionate about creating a safe, engaging, and joyful learning environment—one where curiosity, compassion, and a love of learning can truly thrive. Outside the classroom, he enjoys bikepacking, hiking, skiing, trail running, rock climbing, reading, knitting, playing guitar, soccer, curling, and spending quality time with loved ones.

Heather is delighted to be returning to Redwood class. This will be her tenth year in the Upper Elementary Program. Heather graduated with her Bachelor of Science (Biology) in 2002 and her Bachelor of Education in 2004, both at UVic. She completed her Montessori Training through the Vancouver School Board in 2017. In addition to her job as a classroom teacher, Heather is thrilled to be training teachers in her role as an instructor with the South Island Montessori Training Institute. Heather has always had a passion for teaching in non-traditional classroom environments. She is committed to building strong relationships with students and creating a safe learning community which allows for self-expression and kindles a passion for learning. In her free time she enjoys exercising in the forest and the water, reading, practicing yoga, travelling and spending time with family and friends.

Stacey Weir

Stacey Weir holds an undergraduate degree in education as well as a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction. She is trained in both elementary and secondary Montessori education, having completed her secondary training in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Betsy Coe. Stacey first joined Westmont as a substitute teacher in 2008 before moving to Tofino and Ucluelet, where she taught in the public sector for five years. She returned to Westmont in 2014, drawn back by the school’s individualized approach and its emphasis on fostering self-regulation—skills she believes are essential in today’s tech-driven world. Outside of the classroom, Stacey enjoys mountain biking, lake swimming, and skiing with her husband and twin boys, who are entering Grade 2 at Westmont.

Kristin always had her eye on Westmont since moving to Metchosin 25years ago with the hopes of working there one day. She  joined the Westmont community in 2012 after completing her EA training at Camosun. Kristin moved her focus to music and enjoyed many years as the music teacher with EPK, LE and UE. Kristin now continues her journey as a CA in Upper Elementary, and teaching piano after school. Her work history includes various positions in Educational Programming, working in Provincial Parks, Science Centres and Musuems after receiving her diploma in Environmental Studies at Selkirk College. You can find Kristin hiking  wilderness  trails with her dog Wilson, playing piano or gardening in her spare time.

Nicole brings over 20 years of experience to the Westmont team. A social worker by training, she has honed her skills with youth and families in schools and in the community across Canada and abroad.
Westmont has captured her heart with its commitment to life-long learning and caring community.
When not at Westmont you’ll find Nicole in the backcountry with her daughter, playing sports in the driveway with her son, chasing wayward chickens or building things in her shed.

Maggie completed her Bachelor’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) in Hong Kong and went on to earn a Master of Education from the University of Victoria. Before joining Westmont, she worked in Victoria as a Chinese teacher, English teacher, and piano instructor at a local academy. Her interest in Montessori education began during university, and she was drawn to Westmont’s child-centered philosophy and beautiful natural environment. In her free time, Maggie enjoys outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, and fishing, as well as creative hobbies like playing piano and drawing. She is excited to be part of the Westmont community and to support students in their learning journey.

Marianne Lansdell has been a nature enthusiast since her childhood growing up on a strawberry farm on Vancouver Island.  Her passion for plants drew her to study botany and horticulture in college and then spend many years as the Head Gardener for The Land Conservancy of BC. Marianne later studied Ecological Garden Design at UBC. After having kids, she moved into education, earning her certification as an EA through Northern Lights College and discovering her love of learning. Marianne chose to work at Westmont because of her strong belief in the value of a Montessori education, and her appreciation of a school that incorporates the outdoors into learning. She also REALLY likes the Westmont garden! When she’s not at work, Marianne spends her time exploring nature by hiking, biking, swimming, and paddleboarding with her family and friends.

Cassandra Tang is delighted to be part of the Westmont Middle School community, drawn to its emphasis on student ownership and strong sense of connection. Her background as a speech and language therapist shaped her passion for supporting diverse learners, and she later completed her Master’s degree at Northwestern University, focusing on writing development. Outside of school, Cassandra enjoys exploring the forests and beaches of Victoria with her family or relaxing with a good book.

Kayleigh Udy

This year marks Kayleigh Udy’s fourth year teaching in Westmont’s middle school program, where she brings curiosity, creativity, and care to her classroom. She earned her Bachelor of Education at the University of Victoria after moving from her hometown of Calgary and quickly fell in love with life on the island. Kayleigh has also worked extensively with teens with exceptionalities through summer camps, after-school programs, and respite, experiences that deepened her commitment to inclusive and supportive learning environments. After completing her practicum at Westmont, she was drawn to the school’s Montessori philosophy, where students take the lead in their own learning and teachers act as guides who nurture independence and reflection. She especially loves out trips, local immersions, and international travel opportunities within the Secondary Program, which allow students to connect their learning with the wider world. Outside the classroom, Kayleigh enjoys exploring the outdoors, riding her bike, making music, and diving into books or games.

This is J’s fourth year working at Westmont in a supportive capacity and his first year as Tech Lead.   J’s love of science and technology makes him a great fit for assisting students and staff use all the amazing technology now available at the school including 3d printers, laser cutters, and drones.

J has had an eclectic career, from running a daycare to dropping bombs down oil wells, J has done a little bit of everything.  J was drawn to Westmont because of the beautiful campus and the collaborative, team-driven culture on display in every classroom.  J loves reading books, playing video games and fishing for trout.

Henry Xu’s Bio

Henry Xu recently completed his Master of Arts in Education at the University of Victoria, building on his Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature from Beijing International Studies University. With over a decade of experience as an EFL/ESL teacher, Henry is passionate about language education and creating meaningful learning experiences for students.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Henry is an avid adventurer. In 2020, he undertook a remarkable 2,200-kilometre cycling journey from Szechuan to Tibet. Over the course of 24 days, he navigated snow-capped mountains, battled altitude sickness, and crossed 5,000-metre-high mountain passes—an unforgettable feat showcasing his determination and resilience.

Colin completed his Bachelor of Science in Biology from UVic in 2007 and began his career teaching abroad in South Korea, England, Bolivia, and mainland China, before returning in 2017 to continue teaching in Victoria.  He is thrilled to be joining Westmont’s beautiful and welcoming environment here in Metchosin, and he has greatly enjoyed his commute along the Galloping Goose from Victoria each morning.  Colin enjoys weightlifting, a good coffee, cryptic crosswords, and brushing up on his Mandarin, but he’s always keen to learn something new from his students!

Luke holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and English (2017) and a Master of Teaching in Secondary Education (2019), both from the University of Sydney, Australia. After three exciting years teaching and leading school immersions in Sydney, Luke made the leap to Canada, first teaching in Ontario before heading west to Vancouver Island, where he joined Westmont in 2022.
Drawn to the innovative, project-based, and cross-curricular model of Westmont’s high school program, Luke brings his passion for experiential education to life through immersive projects, real-world learning, and the belief that travel is one of the most powerful teachers.
When he’s not dreaming up the next engaging (and occasionally wacky) learning experience or planning an epic out trip, you’ll likely find Luke riding his bike around Victoria, relaxing by the water, or playing and watching sports

Jess was born in Zimbabwe and later pursued her studies in England, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and a Master’s Degree in Practical Skills and Therapeutic Education. With over 15 years of teaching experience, she has cultivated a deep passion for guiding students in their creative and personal growth.

Jess chose to join Westmont School because of its commitment to developing the whole child. She was drawn to the school’s holistic approach to education, its culture of kindness and respect, and its beautiful, supportive learning environment.

Inclusion Support Lead

Frances Griese grew up in a close-knit community on Vancouver Island and pursued her post-secondary education at the University of Victoria, earning a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education, and both a Certificate and Diploma in Special and Inclusive Education. Her professional journey with Westmont began in 2011 as a Teacher on Call, followed by a role as an Educational Assistant, before returning in 2017 as the Inclusion Support Coordinator after a period working in Communications for the Provincial Government. Initially drawn to Westmont by its breathtaking natural setting, reminiscent of her rural upbringing, Frances quickly connected with the school’s Montessori philosophy and its bold, student-centered approach to learning. She brings a deep commitment to inclusive education and values being part of a visionary and nurturing community. Outside of school, Frances enjoys gardening, swimming, fishing, and exploring the arts and the outdoors with her family.

Inclusion Support Teacher (Upper Elementary)

Daralee Hanton has been a staff member at Westmont since 2008, working as both a lower and upper elementary teacher. She is entering her third year of her current role,  Upper Elementary Inclusion Support Teacher.  She received her B.Ed and Elementary Montessori training in Calgary. Daralee has watched both of her children thrive at Westmont from the age of 2 through to their Grade 12 graduations, knowing they are both completely ready for what comes next. Outside of school Daralee enjoys reading, kayaking, gardening and yoga.

 

Barb Lewis

Inclusion Support Teacher (Lower Elementary)

Barb is a long-term employee at  Westmont who is currently on the Inclusion Support Team offering reading support in the Lower Elementary Program, as well as giving tours to new families on Thursday mornings.  Barb is a certified teacher and E.C.E., and is trained in both Early Years and Elementary Montessori pedagogy.  She loves travelling and hiking, and spending time at her cabin.

Danny Buchanan is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and an AMS-certified Montessori teacher. He has been part of the Westmont community since 2013. A Westmont alum himself, Danny’s experience as a student at the school inspired him to pursue teaching. The same qualities that first drew him to Westmont continue to fuel his passion today:

Kim grew up in Richmond, BC, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at UBC. After working in the field for many years on Vancouver Island, she began volunteering in Westmont’s library when her son joined the Early Years Program in 2017.

With a mother who was a school librarian for 18 years, Kim shares a deep passion for engaging children and fostering a love of books. She has worked under the mentorship of Liz, who founded the library 31 years ago, and strives to create a welcoming, inspiring space for students.

Drawn to Westmont’s community and individualized approach, Kim joined after a friend’s recommendation—she even placed her son on the waiting list at six months old!

In her free time, she enjoys reading, creative projects, camping, paddleboarding, and trying to keep up with her son on his mountain bike!

Library Assistant

Liz graduated as an RN from RJH School of Nursing in 1975. She nursed for 12 years, retiring when starting her family. Liz volunteered for over 20 years as Archivist of the RJH School of Nursing Archives and Museum which provided additional experience, contacts  and knowledge for her library work.
In 1993 her son Jake entered Grade 2 at the Luxton location of Westmont. At that time Liz and 3 other parents established the library. Liz continued  volunteering and developing the library over the years. Her library training was a short Introduction to Library Management and several professional workshops over the years. In 2008 Liz was formally hired and with volunteers has expanded the library.
Jake continued at Westmont through Grade 9  (highest level). Liz’s late husband, John, served on the  WCMS Board for several years. His commercial fishing supplied the highly popular tuna and halibut for the annual auctions. Liz continues that tradition with donations of canned tuna annually.  Their daughter Katie was at Westmont from Pre-school to Grade 6 (highest level). Liz says they were so impressed with  the Montessori program they could hardly wait till Katie was old enough to enroll! During those years Liz was active on the PAC as Secretary.   Currently her granddaughter Harriet is in second year of Preschool.

Ariana Whitman

French Teacher

Ariana grew up in rural Ontario, where she developed a deep appreciation for nature, languages, and literature. She pursued her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the University of Guelph, followed by teacher training at Nipissing University. Ariana also obtained her French certification through College Boreal and Lakehead University.

With over 20 years of teaching experience across Ontario, British Columbia, and even Fukushima, Japan, Ariana has taught English, ESL, Art, and French to students from kindergarten through Grade 12. Her career highlights include teaching French Immersion Arts at Nantyr Shores Secondary School in Ontario and delivering International Baccalaureate (IB) French programming at St. John’s Academy in British Columbia. She is excited to bring her expertise to Westmont and is beginning her Master of Arts in Leadership at Royal Roads University to further enhance her professional practice.

Ariana felt an immediate connection to Westmont upon seeing the beautiful learning garden and was drawn to the school’s commitment to Montessori methodology. Having taught within various educational frameworks, she is eager to expand her skills as both an educator and a parent.

Outside of the classroom, Ariana enjoys spending time with her quirky and sporty seven-year-old son, who is fully bilingual. She has two Siamese cats adorably named after a 90s pop duo and family connections across the globe. In her free time, Ariana loves sewing projects, cherry blossoms, and strawberry bubble tea.

Dylan Cheshire

Dylan attended Laurentian University’s Music Program where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Music (specializing in Jazz), as well as a Bachelor of Education. Since graduating he has accumulated a decade’s worth of experience teaching music both privately and in public schools and has played professionally in various music groups; playing a variety of genres across Canada. Dylan’s passion for life-long learning and Music Education has allowed him to develop a unique pedagogy for teaching a variety of instruments, in which he focusses on his student’s own unique musical tastes and learning styles, ensuring both instrumental playing skill is coupled with an in-depth understanding of modern musical theory.

Dylan was drawn to working at the Westmont Montessori School based on his desire to help the school further develop it’s own unique all-encompassing music program in which students of all ages have the opportunity to shape their own musical education as well as explore a variety of musical instruments and styles of music.

In his spare time Dylan enjoys writing, performing, and recording his own music as well as catching the odd wave at many of Vancouver Island’s beautiful coastal beaches.

Olly Wood

Physical Education Teacher

Olly Wood holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Queensland, Australia, and has been teaching since 2010. He began his career in his hometown of Brisbane as a Physical Education teacher and has since been fortunate to teach at international schools in Dubai and Singapore. He has always focused on Physical Education, sometimes alongside other subjects, and it remains a true passion. Now in his second year at Westmont, Olly was drawn to the school by his love for Metchosin and its stunning pastures and beaches, feeling that Westmont is the perfect fit. With the beautiful school field and the surrounding Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park, there are endless opportunities for students to explore and play. As a dad of two young boys, Olly understands the importance of children being active and healthy from a young age, and he makes sure to keep moving himself. When he’s not playing cricket for the local Metchosin club in the summer, he has recently taken up surfing along the West Coast in the winter.

Kim Maan has been an educator at Westmont since 2009, taking on the position of full-time classroom teacher until 2019. After graduating from UVic, she taught for many years at an independent school for gifted learners in Richmond, BC. Kim now relishes her role as a teacher-on-call and is also incredibly pleased to be part of the Hemlock team on Fridays. As well, Kim continues as an afterschool elementary daycare supervisor this year, a position she thoroughly enjoys. Garden therapy is her solace at home as is spending time in Mexico.

Karen has worked as a Preschool Supervisor at various daycare centres for nearly 20 years.

Liz has been a valued member of the Westmont community for the past three years where her daughter also attends. She completed her training at Coastal College of BC where she earned her Education Assistant diploma, ECEA certificate, and completed the Autism, Applied Behaviour Analysis, Augmentative and Alternative Communications Course. Previous to starting her journey in education, Liz taught dance in the community for many years where she gained extensive knowledge and experience working with children of all ages from early years age to post graduate. Dance is still a passion of hers which she hopes to continue to share with students in the years to come. In her free time, Liz enjoys being in nature, playing the piano, and spending time with her family.

Nicole is in her second year as a Classroom Assistant in the Lower Elementary program at Westmont. She holds both an Early Childhood Education certificate and a Montessori diploma and has been working with children in the field for nearly twenty years. Nicole loves being part of the Montessori community and especially enjoys supporting students in their learning and growth. She was drawn to Westmont’s beautiful location, with its close connection to nature, trails, and the beach. Outside of school, Nicole enjoys crafting and finding creative ways to bring her ideas to life.

Camp Program Supervisor

Supervisor of Westmont Camps and TOC, Jaden is one of the younger and more recent additions to Westmont. A graduate of the VIU high-school teacher program as of this 2025, Jaden is a returning alumni of Westmont. In 2023, Jaden graduated from UVic with a double major in English and History with a certification in Climate Change, taking part in a publication with UVic, the UN, and local climate change institutions. Jaden has worked with Parks Canada, public school districts, and other camps. Furthermore, Jaden is Soccer Canada C license certified and a manager at JDF Soccer. In his free time, you will likely find Jaden in Colwood/Langford playing soccer or training for marathons.
